Hundreds of thousands of people have been sheltering in severely damaged homes without doors or windows, or in community buildings such as mosques, churches and schools.
The country is in a state of emergency as it faces devastation and destruction like never before. As time goes on, the real impact and extent of the damage is becoming clearer. It has been estimated 300, 000 people have been made homeless due to the blast.
Right now, SKT Welfare is working with local, established partners on the ground in Beirut to deliver emergency aid. We are distributing food to affected families and conducting thorough assessments to determine the most pressing needs of the community. This will enable us to develop a structured, long-term response to help rebuild the community and really help those most in need.
We have already provided affected families with food and aid, and will continue to improve and upscale our work.
An estimated 300,000 people have been left homeless. Reports reveal that the explosion was so strong that it was heard and felt as far away as Cyprus – more than 200km away.
Families are desperately searching for loved ones, and there are fears the death toll figures will continue to rise as the situation becomes clearer over the coming days.
Lebanon has been facing political and economic instability for a number of years, and the country was already on the verge of collapse. This was made worse by the Coronavirus outbreak and the resulting lockdown. Hospitals in Beirut are receiving an influx of wounded people, and have no choice but to turn some away or refer them to a hospital over 50km away.
This latest explosion could push Lebanon into further despair, causing a deep-rooted crisis like never before seen.
SKT Welfare are working with partner organisations in Lebanon to provide emergency aid to those affected by this devastating crisis. We will be monitoring the situation and work to support the people of Lebanon to recover and rebuild their lives.
Our initial response will focus on distributing food, water and medical aid to those that are wounded or have lost their homes and are sheltering in buildings such as schools, mosques and churches.
