South Sudan is the world’s youngest nation, but since gaining independence in 2011, it has been caught in relentless cycles of conflict, hunger, and displacement. Just two years after independence, civil war erupted, forcing millions to flee their homes. Today, more than 2.3 million South Sudanese live as refugees in neighbouring countries. The crisis deepened further when renewed violence in Sudan triggered the return of over 1 million people, placing immense pressure on already fragile communities. Armed conflict, climate shocks, and disease outbreaks have pushed families to the brink, with humanitarian aid suspended in several regions due to insecurity.
Women and children make up the vast majority of those displaced. Many have fled repeatedly, surviving violence, exploitation, and loss. Girls, in particular, face growing risks of trafficking, abuse, and early marriage as families struggle to survive. With food systems collapsing and services in freefall, South Sudan is experiencing one of the most severe humanitarian crises since its birth.
Uganda has become a critical haven. Its refugee settlements now host nearly a million South Sudanese, one of the largest refugee populations in the world. While Uganda’s open-door policy offers safety, these settlements remain severely under-resourced. Families are living in overcrowded shelters, clean water is scarce, and children are growing up without access to healthcare or education; for many of them, displacement is all they’ve ever known.
